Why Isn't My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT?

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Businesses to Mention?

ChatGPT's search-grounded answers run on the Bing index, not Google's. If Bing hasn't indexed your site, ChatGPT has nothing to cite — full stop, before any other factor matters. From there, the model looks for three more things: content that directly answers a real question, structured data confirming what your business actually is, and independent sources that corroborate your own claims about yourself.

Miss any one of these and ChatGPT has nothing solid to work with, even if your website looks polished to a human visitor. Five specific gaps typically cause this. Each is simple to self-check below, or run a free scan and get all five checked at once. For the fuller mechanics, see our AI SEO NYC guide.

Cause 1: Does Your Website Actually Answer the Question?

Most business websites are written for a person who already knows who you are — a homepage with a hero image, a tagline, a "Get a Quote" button. ChatGPT needs the opposite: a direct, self-contained answer it can lift and cite.

Self-check: Search the exact question a customer would type — "best [service] in [your NYC neighborhood]" — and see whether any page on your site answers it in plain sentences within the first few lines.

Fix: - Open every key service page with a 40-60 word answer: what you do, who it's for, and where you serve — before any marketing language. - Build one page per real question customers ask instead of a single "Services" page trying to cover everything at once.

This matters because 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages that already have organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026) — the content has to earn its place before ChatGPT will consider lifting it.

Cause 2: Is Your Schema Markup Missing or Wrong?

ChatGPT and the crawlers feeding it lean on schema markup — structured data in your page code — to confirm what you are, where you're located, and what you offer, without guessing from prose.

Self-check: View your homepage source, or run Google's Rich Results Test, and look for LocalBusiness, Organization, or FAQPage schema. Then check whether the name, address, and phone number in that schema match what's listed everywhere else, exactly.

Fix: - Add LocalBusiness or Organization schema with accurate name, address, phone, hours, and service area. - Add FAQPage schema to any page with question-and-answer content — FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026), and it hands ChatGPT the same clean Q&A pairs to work from.

Cause 3: Are You Actually Indexed in Bing?

This check has nothing to do with Google — which is exactly why it's easy to overlook.

Self-check: Search site:yourdomain.com on Bing itself. If nothing comes up, or results are thin and outdated, you're effectively invisible to ChatGPT's search grounding — those answers run against the Bing index, and not being indexed there means not being citable.

Fix: - Submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools — it's separate from Google Search Console, and setting up one doesn't set up the other. - Fix any crawl errors Bing Webmaster Tools flags, then manually request indexing on your top pages.

This is also where traditional SEO and AI visibility overlap most directly — see NYC SEO vs AI visibility for how the two relate.

Cause 4: Does Anyone Else Online Confirm You Exist?

ChatGPT doesn't just trust what your own website says about you. It weighs whether anyone else, independently, says the same thing.

Self-check: Search your business name in quotation marks and count independent mentions — directories, press, review platforms, industry associations — that aren't your own site or social profiles. Then check whether your Google Business Profile and any industry directories list consistent, current details.

Fix: - Claim and complete profiles on the directories that matter for your category — industry-specific listings first, general ones second. - Pursue a handful of legitimate mentions, such as local press, trade associations, or partner sites, over volume. ChatGPT weighs corroboration, not link count.

Cause 5: Are AI Crawlers Blocked on Your Site?

This is the simplest check on the list and the one with the highest stakes if you fail it.

Self-check: Pull up yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules under GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Bingbot. If you run a security plugin or website platform with a blanket "block AI bots" toggle, check that setting specifically.

Fix: - Remove Disallow rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, and Bingbot at minimum. Blocking them means those systems cannot read or cite your site, period. - Leave any "block all AI" setting off unless you have a specific concern. Training-only crawlers like CCBot can be blocked narrowly without also blocking the crawlers that make you citable.

Why Is This Harder to Fix in NYC Than in Most Cities?

New York City has more than 183,000 small businesses in operation — the highest count in the city's history — inside 4.8 million total jobs (NYC Department of Small Business Services, Dec 2025). That's a lot of businesses competing for the same handful of ChatGPT citations.

It's also the most contested AI-visibility market of any hub in our network — and it's Profound's own turf. Profound, the AI-visibility platform, is headquartered in New York and raised a $96M Series C at a $1B valuation with roughly 700 enterprise customers (Fortune, Feb 2026). NoGood, an NYC growth agency, runs a standalone AEO service. Mimvi SEO markets itself as "Top-Rated AI SEO NYC" from Manhattan, and Semrush's directory lists 55 SEO agencies serving NYC in its 2026 edition. Whether you're in Midtown, FiDi, DUMBO, or Long Island City, you're competing against well-funded incumbents for a limited number of citation slots — see our NYC AI Visibility Index for how we're tracking this market.

Deep AI Solutions is Texas-headquartered. We have no NYC office, and we're not pretending otherwise — AI-visibility work is measurement and engineering, not a desk in Manhattan. What we bring is a published method: a live AI Visibility Index built on real scan data, plus our Houston AI Visibility Index study, which found a metro-wide median AIR Score of 31/100 before we ever touched an account.

What Should You Do About It?

You don't have to guess which of these five apply to you. Run a free AI visibility scan and get a plain report on how your business shows up across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity — the same five systems behind the AIR Score.

If the scan turns up real gaps, our plans are month-to-month with no setup fee: Signal ($1,299/mo), Authority ($2,999/mo), and Dominance ($5,999/mo). See the services breakdown for what's included at each tier, or call (281) 937-3337 to talk through your results first.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for ChatGPT to start citing my business after I fix these issues?

There's no fixed timeline because ChatGPT draws on Bing's index and cached web data, both of which refresh on their own schedules. Crawler access and schema are changes you control directly, so they tend to show results faster. Third-party corroboration takes longer because it depends on other sites publishing about you. Pages left untouched for roughly 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026), so treat this as ongoing maintenance, not a one-time fix.

Is this different from regular Google SEO?

Related but not identical. Traditional SEO targets Google's organic rankings; ChatGPT's search-grounded answers run against Bing's index instead, and layer in schema and third-party corroboration Google ranking doesn't require in the same way. Google AI Overviews, separately, appear in roughly half of Google searches (D&D SEO Services, 2026). You need both — see NYC SEO vs AI visibility for the full breakdown.

Does my business need to be based in NYC for ChatGPT to recommend it?

No — location affects which local competitors you're up against, not whether ChatGPT can find you. What matters is whether your site answers real questions, carries correct schema, sits in Bing's index, and has independent corroboration. Deep AI Solutions is Texas-headquartered and works with NYC businesses entirely remotely for exactly this reason: this is measurement and engineering work, not a local-office service.

What's the fastest single fix if I can only do one thing today?

Check robots.txt first. If GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, or Bingbot are disallowed, nothing else on this page matters — ChatGPT literally cannot read your site. That fix is simple: remove the disallow rule, save, and you're done. Every other cause (content, schema, indexing, corroboration) takes real, ongoing work, but crawler access is binary — either it's blocked or it isn't.

Can I check all five causes myself, or do I need a tool?

You can check all five manually using the steps on this page — none require paid software. A scan just does it faster and cross-references your results against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity at once instead of one at a time. Run a free scan if you'd rather see all five flagged in one report than work through each check separately.

Does having a great website guarantee ChatGPT will mention me?

No. A polished website with no schema, no Bing indexing, and no third-party corroboration can still be invisible to ChatGPT, while a plainer site that nails all five factors gets cited. Design quality signals trust to human visitors, but ChatGPT is reading structure and cross-referencing outside sources, not judging visual polish. Treat the two as separate problems that both need solving.

Do these five causes apply to businesses outside New York City too?

Yes. Bing indexing, schema markup, answer-first content, third-party corroboration, and crawler access are the same five mechanics everywhere ChatGPT operates — nothing about them is NYC-specific. The competitive intensity changes by market (NYC is the most contested market in our own network of hubs), but the underlying fixes are identical whether you're in Manhattan or a mid-sized metro.
